Lopez Island Physical Education Upper Elementary
I. Our goals for the students:
- to have a good experience
- to develop a positive self image
- to develop desirable attitudes and sportsmanship
- to learn the importance of physical fitness and exercise
II. Class rules:
- Be prepared-- (no books or pencils, use restroom before PE etc.)
- Be punctual -- (hustle over to PE class, wait quietly for instructions)
- Be courteous -- (to the teacher and to each other)
- Give PE your best shot -- (a student is not compared with another
student. Everyone has different skills and abilities.)
- Smile and have fun
III. Curriculum
- Games and activities are planned to involve everyone. Stand-around
time is minimal.
- Step-by-step and building-on skills are taught in each unit.
Example: Soccer Unit
- rules
- skills (dribbling, passing, trapping etc.)
- line soccer (1/2 field, using skills taught)
- zone soccer (teaches position play )
- regular soccer game
- Activities include some of the following: Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Tumbling, Jump Ropes, Basketball, Track & Field, Softball, Team Handball, Floor Hockey, Broomball, Misc. Games (Capture the Flag, Dodgeball, Trees, Kickball, Mat Ball etc.), Fitness Testing (12 minute run, 400 meter dash, 1 minute sit-ups, 30 seconds push ups).
Standards for Physical Education 1-5
FIRST
1. Listens and follows directions
2. Actively participates in group and individual activities
3. Learning characteristics of proper sportsmanship
4. Uses a variety of basic movements (locomotor and non-locomotor)
5. Recognizes different sports
6. Identifies bones and muscles taught in class
7. Understands goals and basic rules of simple games and activities
SECOND
1. Listens and follows directions
2. Actively participates in group and individual activities
3. Learning characteristics of proper sportsmanship
4. Uses a variety of basic movements (locomotor and non-locomotor)
5. Identifies bones and muscles taught in class
6. Understands the goals and basic rules of simple games and activities
7. Learning basic offense and defense in activity settings
THIRD
1. Listens and follows instructions
2. Actively participates in group and individual activities
3. Applying characteristics of proper sportsmanship
4. Uses a variety of fundamental movement skills
5. Identifies bones and muscles taught in class
6. Understands the goals and basic rules of the games and activities
7. Learning basic offensive and defensive principles and applying them in game situations
8. Learning and applying basic strategy concepts
FOURTH & FIFTH
1. Listens and follows instructions
2. Displays a positive attitude and proper behavior in the class setting
3. Displays characteristics of proper sportsmanship
4. Actively participates in physical activities that develop and maintain cardio-respiratory, flexibility, and muscular strength.
5. Understands the terminology, goals, and rules of different games and activities
6. Uses basic sport-specific skills for a variety of physical activities (individual, dual, team sports)
7. Learning to use basic offensive and defensive strategies in different activities and games
8. Works in a group to accomplish a set goal in both cooperative and competitive activities
